Overview
Surrounded with live oaks and remnants of a former limestone mine, Brooksville Country Club is a dramatically different central Florida golf course design. Accentuated by a deep quarry on the back nine, Brooksville’s 17th hole was named to Golf Digest’s, “America’s Best 18 Holes Since 2000.”

Challenge
Located just north of Tampa in Brooksville, Fla., Bobby Weed Golf Design was tasked with building a new back nine on terrain that had a surprising amount of elevation changes and physical barriers.
Approach
The original front nine was left intact for a future retro-fit. It is a more traditional design with tree-lined fairways and soft rolling hills. From this, BWGD wanted anticipation to build as players transitioned to a noticeably distinct back nine.
Great golf holes often look like they were discovered in their landscape. Fortunately, Bobby Weed and Chris Monti were able to incorporate four new holes into the terrain of an old limestone mine.
Solution
Hole 12: BWGD built parallel high and low fairways that run along a ridge at the bottom of an old quarry. These split fairways are a masterful balance of visual intimidation and forgiving room for misses.
Hole 17: The green is set at the bottom of an excavated pit, wedged between a pond and exposed quarry wall. It’s a beautiful but testing par-3. Little room is offered to miss diagonally. The pin can be set further over the water depending on the hole location.
Overall, elevation changes and sloping greens make players forget they are in Florida.
As Derek Duncan of Golf Digest concludes, “Pete Dye often built short, perilous par-3’s as penultimate tests of nerve and accuracy. Brooksville does the same here, strikingly so. Sometimes you have to step up and hit the shot.”
