Waynesville, North Carolina

Waynesville Inn and Golf Club

Renovation

Overview

In summer 2021, Bobby Weed Golf Design began renovations to Waynesville Inn and Golf Club in the majestic mountains of western North Carolina. In partnership with Raines, BWGD is extensively upgrading the 27-hole layout, including Donald Ross’ “Carolina 9,” to a better 18 holes. The front nine will open by fall 2022. The back nine will be ready spring 2023.

A study is also being commissioned to explore a new short golf course and Himalayan-style putting course.

Moreover, a full-service practice facility will be employed by enlarging teeing grounds and adding new greens.

Simultaneously, the historic Waynesville Inn and cottages are undergoing renovations and will join the boutique hotel division, Woven by Raines.

Challenge

Built on a former dairy farm in 1926, Waynesville Inn and Golf Club will proudly celebrate its centennial anniversary in 2026.

The original intent was to construct three aesthetically pleasing nine hole golf courses that were challenging yet accessible for all skill levels: Carolina (1926), Dogwood (1929) and Blue Ridge (1986).

Bobby’s wife, Leslie, has generational family ties in Waynesville that date back over 100 years. As long-time area residents, Raines hired BWGD to modernize this revered golf club next to Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Approach

BWGD’s Master Plan will identify the club’s most actionable items, while combining a long-term sustainability strategy that allows the Waynesville Inn and Golf Club to prepare for future needs.

Features of the Master Plan include timelines, infrastructure and capital improvement needs, a hole-by-hole analysis, a full course restoration, agronomic best practices and efficient budgeting.

Solution

“With deep roots in the Carolinas and 40-plus years of experience, we have entrusted Bobby Weed Golf Design to direct our golf course restoration,” said Grey Raines, managing partner of Raines. “Bobby has pledged to be on-site to lead our promising road ahead, and for that we are most grateful.”

BWGD possesses extensive knowledge of restoring and carrying on the legacy of original Donald Ross designs. Other Ross layouts that BWGD has been hired to preserve include Linville Golf Club, Palatka Golf Club, Palma Ceia Golf & Country Club, Timuquana Country Club and University of Florida’s Mark Bostick Golf Club.
