Overview
TPC Las Vegas, previously known as TPC at The Canyons, is set against an awe-inspiring mountain backdrop. This rocky, rigorous test features holes that weave intricately between deep, craggy arroyos.
Since opening in 1996, TPC Las Vegas has proudly hosted the PGA TOUR’s Shriners Hospitals for Children Open and Bard Capital Challenge, as well as the Las Vegas Senior Classic on the PGA TOUR Champions. World Golf Hall of Fame member Raymond Floyd consulted closely with Weed on the design.

Challenge
At the time, TPC Las Vegas was built in the nation’s largest master-planned community of Summerlin.
Golf course architect Bobby Weed and player consultant Raymond Floyd were tasked with creating the premier PGA TOUR venue in Las Vegas that could host professionals, celebrities, resort guests and locals. A careful balance of design variety, shot value, memorability and ambiance would be needed.
Environmental sustainability was also a keen focus. Water resources in the Nevada desert are extremely limited. It was imperative that Weed design a golf course that was not over-reliant on these precious supplies.
Approach
Built at elevations above 2,000 feet, players receive 4-5 percent increased distance in the high desert. The par-71 challenges professionals at 7,104 yards. A variety of forward playing tees assist in negotiating the arroyos throughout the layout.
Weed, a protege of Pete Dye, incorporated TPC Sawgrass island-green design cues when building the par-3 second hole (named “Canyon”). An almost 200-yard carry from the tips brings players to an island-like green in the middle of the desert.
The design team also took significant steps during construction to preserve natural wildlife habitats, native desert grasses and reduce water usage. TPC Las Vegas has since been recognized as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.
