Overview
The Ocean Course at the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club was originally constructed in 1928 by Herbert Strong and later renovated in 1998 by Bobby Weed Golf Design.
In 2021, BWGD was again commissioned to lead a comprehensive over-haul of the course, updating all aspects of the design and infrastructure to modern day standards. The design trio tasked with transforming this gem of a course included Bobby Weed, Chris Monti and Joey Graziani.

Challenge
Our challenge was to modernize and prepare the golf club for future generations while carefully preserving its 90-plus years of history and prestige.
The cornerstone of this golf course renovation was identifying land on the north end of the property. A newfound parcel allowed the design team to focus on advantageous routing adjustments, repurposing of partial acreage for golf and resort use, and significant improvements to the practice facility.
Approach
This renovation was designed to achieve four over–arching goals:
Fun: Maximize enjoyment for all skill levels
Interest: Stimulate new/renewed enthusiasm in golf
Appearance: Bolster the course’s seaside character
Maintenance: New foundation that efficiently conserves water, money and labor
Solution
A new par-3, 13th hole was developed. This introduced a pleasant break between former back-to-back par 5’s.
The land parcel also allowed for the practice facilities to be expanded on the footprint of the former 10th. Teeing space was tripled and double-sided targets shaped to serve members, guests, private lessons and corporate outings.
Additionally, the first tee was transformed into a multi-use space. 20,000 square feet of tightly mown bermudagrass now serves as a teeing ground and pristine outdoor event space. The proximity to the resort’s back lawn produces a special setting that few other first tees in America can match.
Awarded Golf Inc.’s “2021 Renovation of the Year, Runner Up, Private Club” accolade, the Ocean Course project was completed on time and within budget.
