Overview
Tradition and heritage are hallmarks at Linville Golf Club, dating back to 1892. Since 1924, this famed original Donald Ross layout has hosted generations of players. The western North Carolina layout twists and tumbles along the banks of Grandmother Creek, a winding stream that impacts strategy on no less than ten holes.
Linville’s aesthetics are simple and traditional. A variety of turfgrass types gives the course a mottled look, which is characteristic of design in the 1920’s.

Challenge
Bobby Weed Golf Design came on board in the mid-1990’s as a consultant to assist the club in navigating the changing standards of golf equipment and agronomy. “Come up, play the golf course, get to know our members and our staff,” Weed recalls from former club president, Alan Dickson. “He said, ‘You need to understand our culture before you do any work.'”
Approach
For over two decades, Weed supervised the construction of new tees, which lengthened the course to nearly 7,000 yards. Irrigation, drainage and bunkers have all also been rebuilt.
“Unlike some of our past work on Ross layouts, the Ross traits of Linville Golf Club are still evident and in play,” offered Bobby Weed. “Our goal has been to restore eroded features, re-level the tees, soften a few greens and bring the infrastructure back to where it can appropriately support the maintenance of the course.”
Solution
Linville Golf Club remains the classic Ross layout built by pan and mule. Weed recalls, “It’s hard to replicate the look of the old pock marks and humps. They’re so natural.” Maintaining the mottled and crinkled look of the past was paramount to the improvements and preservations of this historic layout.
