The natural beauty of the South Carolina Lowcountry is on full display at Hilton Head National.
In a special collaboration with two respected golf course architects, the front nine was designed by South Carolina native and former PGA TOUR in-house architect, Bobby Weed. The back nine was created by World Golf Hall of Fame member and Global Ambassador, Gary Player.
Located in Bluffton, SC just one mile from Hilton Head Island and 30 minutes from Savannah, GA, Hilton Head National features a distinct texture of native grasses, flashed face bunkers and close-cut green surrounds.

Challenge
Golf course collaborations require architects with different design philosophies and styles to merge their experiences together.
At Hilton Head National, Weed and Player recognized the importance of having a quality balance between nines. Weed designed his front nine to complement Player’s back nine.
Approach
Weed and Player inherited 300-acres of tree-rich bottomland, as well as no on-course home development. Paired with an abundance of natural wildlife, live oak hammocks and native flora, the site is an active sanctuary.
While the par-71 layout is not overly long, critical thinking and strategy are just as important as distance off the tee.
Weed’s front nine features larger greens, with more dramatic undulations. Deep pot bunkers and striking holes along the marsh are frequent.
Given the low elevation, Weed shaped fairways to quickly drain water. Tiered lies, elevated bunkers and shaved greenside areas place an emphasis on accurate yardages and well-executed shots.

Regarded as one of the Lowcountry’s best public courses, Hilton Head National has solidified itself as an exciting and memorable golf course collaboration by Weed and Player.
30-plus years after being constructed in 1989, Hilton Head National also remains one of the best conditioned courses in South Carolina, highlighted by immaculate TifEagle greens that roll fast and firm.
