Harbour Ridge Yacht and Country Club, Golden Marsh Course

Renovation

Overview

The Golden Marsh course weaves through mature pine flatwoods, natural lagoons and wetlands. Bobby Weed Golf Design’s modernized layout at Harbour Ridge Yacht & Country Club introduced extensive non-turf screening areas and high visual contrast. Low-profile features around the greens, coupled with native landscaping, offers a pleasant and pastoral round of golf that stimulates the mind and lowers the heart rate.

This layout is now featured alongside Harbour Ridge’s other 18-hole course, River Ridge, originally designed by Pete and P.B. Dye. Harbour Ridge joins TPC Sawgrass (Stadium and Valley Courses) as multi-course properties featuring the work of both Weed and his legendary mentor.

Challenge

Joe Lee originally designed Golden Marsh in 1984. Almost three decades later, Harbour Ridge hired Bobby Weed for comprehensive golf course updates including:

  • More natural, playable layout
  • Greater shot variety
  • Increased visual interest
  • Lower annual maintenance costs
  • Industry-leading environmental stewardship

A short time of just six months would make for long days in the hot Florida climate. The team would need to work feverishly day in and day out to complete this project on time and on budget.

Approach

All aspects of the property were thoroughly reviewed in order to create a more natural, playable layout with greater variety and interest. Projects included:

  • Reconstructing all green complexes
  • Updating the appearance, conditioning and placement of bunkers
  • Regrassing the entire golf course
  • Installing a new irrigation system
  • Underbrushing the roughs and out-of-play areas
  • Replacing acres of maintained, irrigated turf with pine straw and coquina shell

Solution

The Golden Marsh course is set amidst a 20-acre nature preserve. Bald eagles and other animals call this area home. BWGD took extra care during planning and construction to protect this fragile ecosystem.

After reopening to shining reviews in Nov. 2018, the Golden Marsh course is no longer a hidden jewel on Florida’s “Treasure Coast.” Members now enjoy sweeping vistas, greater shot variety, enhanced native areas and stellar conditioning.
