The Club at Quail Ridge, South Course

Renovation

Overview

The new South Course at Quail Ridge was designed for a discerning audience, including the renowned Society of Seniors, the finest senior amateur players in the world.

Clustered bunkering and open approaches encourage a variety of thoughtful shots. Acres of irrigated turf were replaced with coquina-like screenings and pine straw. The striking visual contrast orients players on each tee as they contemplate ribbons of emerald green turf winding through lighter screenings areas.

Challenge

Bobby Weed Golf Design was tasked with modernizing a 1974 Joe Lee design nearly a half-century later. Two years after a new $23 million clubhouse was built in 2017, the South Course redesign would include a $7.5 million overhaul.

Improving watering efficiencies and best management practices were critical components of the renovation. When BWGD arrived on-site, the irrigation system for the golf course and the 946-home community were tied together. With varying demands for residential and golf course irrigation, an abundance of water was constantly over-used. BWGD re-purposed the existing golf course system to maximize efficiency of the HOA system, while completely updating and separating the golf course irrigation system.

Golf course architects Bobby Weed and Joey Graziani would spend five months living on-site, personally ensuring that the South Course was completed on time, on budget, and in a professional manner that Quail Ridge’s membership would appreciate.

Approach

Designing for a forward-thinking audience is always an engaging experience.

Golf course architects Bobby Weed and Joey Graziani would spend five months living on-site, personally crafting the intricately contoured greens. Clustered bunkering and open approaches encourage thoughtful shot making.

Central to the project was a 12% reduction in irrigated, maintained turf. This was replaced with coquina-like screenings and pine straw. The striking visual contrast orients players on each tee as they contemplate the ribbons of emerald green turf winding through lighter screenings areas. Sturdy coquina boulder walls at several green sites stand as exclamation points on the layout’s new aesthetic.

The practice facility also received a restoration.

Solution

“Quail Ridge’s members are excited about their new golf course. It will afford more pleasure for all caliber of players. Our goal was to accommodate numerous levels of play using a variety of tees, open approaches, wide fairways and strategic bunkering.

A good club starts with a good golf course, but the membership really makes the club what it is. Quail Ridge’s membership is very passionate about the game.

The South Course’s improvements provide a modern, contemporary finish that will keep the membership engaged for many decades.” -Bobby Weed
