Overview
The Country Club of Landfall rests on the Intracoastal Waterway and Howe Creek in historic Wilmington, North Carolina, just minutes from vibrant Wrightsville Beach.
The Dye Course was co-built by Pete Dye, P.B. Dye and Bobby Weed in 1987, which represents 18 of the 45 championship golf holes at Landfall.
Fun fact: The clubhouse and golf courses were often featured in six seasons of filming the hit television series, Dawson’s Creek.

Challenge
Landfall is spread across 2,200 acres on the Cape Fear coastal plain and Tidewater region of Wilmington, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. This coastal terrain has an abundance of fresh and salt water marshes.
The Dye Course would need to preserve the natural character of the land and marine ecosystems, while still offering spectacular views of the Intracoastal Waterway.
Additionally, five sets of tee boxes ranging from 5,000 to 7,000 yards would need to accompany casual members and guests, as well as highly competitive players.
Furthermore, as part of a 45-hole master development with two golf clubhouses, economies of scale had to be taken into account with practice facilities, irrigation systems, golf course equipment, maintenance offices and much more.
Approach
Landfall was designed as one of the finest private, member-owned clubs in the South. Stellar club facilities and services would offer big city luxuries in a small seaside community.
Boasting a robust local and national membership, Pete, P.B. and Bobby created an inviting coastal layout with fewer penal water hazards than standard Dye and Weed designs.
The par-72, 18-hole layout paired Bermuda fairways with Bentgrass greens. At 7,027 yards from the championship tees and 4,859 from the front tees, the Dye Course would offer a tailored experience for everyone.
Solution
Landfall’s Dye Course successfully incorporates Pete, P.B. and Bobby’s design principles: imaginative, holistic, visionary and passionate.
The Dye Course also maintains the “land” in “Landfall” during the final holes, with a classic risk-reward Hole 18 conclusion:
“A short par-five, many players can reach the green in two. The elevated nature of this green, however, provides the challenge. Those to the right will fall into a deep greenside bunker, which provides a much tougher third shor than those who laid up to the front fairway. A tight score coming into this final hole will be just as exciting for amateurs as it is for professionals.” -Top 100 Golf Courses
