Challenge
Debuting for developer Lennar Homes, the innovative par-72 stretches 6,730 yards for the 550-home active adult community. Built on a low-lying site, 1.5 million cubic yards of dirt were required for the golf course and residential development.
With construction commencing throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, crews had to take extra precautions and work through numerous supply chain issues for two years.
Approach
Weed is a leader in building environmentally-conscious golf courses. Stillwater is no exception. Featuring just 70 acres of irrigated turf, BWGD’s forward-thinking design will save thousands of gallons of water every year.
Bunker maintenance is an intense labor and financial commitment for clubs. To counter, BWGD installed EcoBunkers. Sods (grass and part of the soil beneath it) are built on top of each other to create a layered effect. These fortified bunkers:
- Reduce wind-based erosion
- Save time and money on maintenance
- Yield a beautiful on-course aesthetic
Roughs and out-of-play areas are lined with Centipede and Bahiagrass. These grasses are valued for outstanding heat tolerance.
Solution
Sports Illustrated has named Stillwater as their 2022 Most Innovative Course Design and Golf Inc. as their 2023 Development of the Year – Honorable Mention.
Featuring elegant lay-down walls, native grass roughs, small sod wall pot bunkers and an abundance of non-irrigated shell paths, Stillwater’s visual contrast is stunning.
Bobby Weed Golf Design successfully built a golf course for today’s active member. Stillwater’s flexible layout offers multiple loops so members can play as their time permits. “Don’t expect a golf course from the past. We provided Lennar Homes with something distinct and different,” said Bobby Weed.
